The Thread of Making
I WORK ACROSS A VARIETY OF MEDIUMS & SURFACES WHICH ALL REFLECT MY LOVE OF DRAWING, SCRATCHING LINES & WORDS INTO CLAY OR FREE MACHINE STITCHING INTO SCREEN PRINTS & PAINTINGS.
I illustrated my song Open Book in ceramic form. The characters transformed from 2D to 3D installation. I made 85 bird heads and, as the flock grew, they gathered on my studio shelves. I could imagine them chattering away every time I left the room. This is the third dimension; it breathes life into the flat page.
‘Open Book’ is a song about the cycle of grief & the nature of hope. I wove the narrative from song into video drawing, print & mixed media. Books have always fascinated me, physically feeling pages & the narrative was illustrative & easy to imagine as pictures. From a book I made a large ceramic installation, every element of the song created in clay, I loved it, the angels flew with the crows suspended above the pages & birds.
